The Meeting of the Syrian Women’s Political Movement with the German Mission in Damascus

Monday, February 24, 2025, the Syrian Women’s Political Movement met with the German mission in Damascus. Attending the meeting on behalf of the Syrian Women’s Political Movement were members Rajaa Tanjour, Lara Aizouqi, and Nour Salam, while the German side was represented by Margarete Jacob and Janosch Lipowsky.

The meeting aimed to provide an overview of the current context regarding the economic, security, and political situation and to exchange views on key developments and updates. It also addressed the work of the Syrian Women’s Political Movement, its aspirations in light of the current circumstances, and the challenges it faces.

The discussion covered several key topics, including:

  • The necessity for the new Syrian constitution to guarantee public freedoms, foremost among them freedom of expression and the right to peaceful protest.
  • The need for clear laws governing the formation of political parties, political gatherings, and civil society activities.
  • Initiating steps toward a transitional justice process to ensure social cohesion.
  • Including provisions in the constitution that guarantee women’s participation in all sectors and decision-making positions, with a minimum quota of 30%.
  • The importance of enacting laws to implement international agreements and resolutions that protect women’s rights, such as UN Security Council Resolution 1325.
  • The necessity of separating powers in the constitution to strengthen the principle of the rule of law.
  • Enhancing the active participation of young women and men in decision-making positions, while providing them with the necessary support.
  • The importance of establishing safe spaces for dialogue and offering technical and social support.
  • Strengthening transparency in governmental procedures and decision-making.

This meeting is part of the Syrian Women’s Political Movement’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the role of women in political life, ensuring their rights and effective participation in building Syria’s future.
