Statement by the Syrian Women’s Political Movement on the State of Education in As-Suwayda Governorate

The education sector in As-Suwayda Governorate is going through extraordinarily difficult and exceptional circumstances that threaten the future of thousands of students. In addition to the academic year not being completed—unlike in other governorates—the results of the preparatory school exams were delayed, and the high school exams were not held at all due to the events that took place in mid-July. As a result, students are experiencing a deep sense of frustration and anxiety following the loss of an entire academic year, with serious concerns about their future.

At the university level, thousands of students remain unable to continue their studies at Syrian universities outside the governorate, due to the growing rhetoric of incitement and hatred, which poses a threat to their safety and security. Moreover, the new academic year has not yet begun, as many schools in the governorate are still being used as shelters for displaced families.

We, in the Syrian Women’s Political Movement, reaffirm that education is a fundamental and sacred right. It is a tool for protecting society from ignorance and marginalization, and a collective responsibility that must be defended. We categorically reject any attempt to turn education into a bargaining chip or a tool for political pressure.

Accordingly, we call on the Syrian Interim Government to fully assume its responsibilities toward the affected students, to guarantee justice for them, and to ensure a safe and stable learning environment that allows them to pursue their education without fear or deprivation. Education is the future of As-Suwayda, and any violation of that right is a direct assault on the right to life and dignity.

Long live Syria, and long live the diverse Syrian people
