Meeting of the Syrian Women’s Political Movement and Its Partners with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres

The Syrian Women’s Political Movement, in partnership with Madaniya, the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression, The Day After Organization, the Syrian Program for Legal Development, and a group of independent Syrian experts, held a virtual meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Mr. António Guterres on 7 November 2025 to present key messages and priorities related to the Syrian context.

The Syrian Women’s Political Movement and its partners emphasized the importance of establishing an integrated United Nations mission in Syria grounded in transparency, meaningful dialogue, and the participation of Syrian civil society from the outset. They stressed that the mission should be Syrian-led and Syrian-owned, with women, youth, and victims’ groups engaged as equal partners in governance and oversight. Participants underscored the need for the mission’s mandate to be clear, comprehensive, and human-rights-based, supporting political transition, recovery, and reconstruction, while promoting diversity and good governance.

During the meeting, participants clarified that the presence of the mission should be balanced and supportive of Syrian institutions without creating dependency, while prioritizing accountability, transparency, and learning. They also reaffirmed the importance of respecting and complementing existing UN mechanisms—such as the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM), the Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP), and the Commission of Inquiry (CoI)—without undermining their independence or diminishing the role of Syrian civil society.

This meeting highlights the vital role of Syrian civil society in shaping international action toward a peaceful, just, and inclusive future for Syria.
