Following up on our statement dated April 23, 2025, in which we called for urgent and transparent investigations into the incidents of women’s abductions, especially in the Syrian coast, and for ensuring the safety of all citizens, the immediate disclosure of the fate of the abducted women, their safe return, protection of their families from any acts of revenge or threats, and accountability for all those responsible for these ongoing crimes— and with reference to the report of Mr. Paulo Pinheiro, Chair of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic, at the 59th session of the Human Rights Council, which referred to arbitrary killings and the abduction of Alawite women — we, at the Syrian Women’s Political Movement, strongly condemn and vehemently denounce these ongoing crimes against Alawite women, which cannot be seen as isolated or exceptional incidents under any circumstances. We see that their continuation and the failure to address them seriously by the authorities contradict the essence of the transitional process, which must place the protection of women at its core. These crimes, committed by extremist elements and groups who remain unaccountable, are part of an organized campaign of terror aimed at silencing women, humiliating them, and destabilizing communities already suffering from the consequences of a long and painful war.
We also condemn the laxity of security agencies in investigating these crimes, which exposes more women to danger by obscuring the facts, opening the door to stigmatization of the victims, and intimidating their families. This laxity creates an enabling environment for criminals to continue their crimes against women and civilians in general.
The Syrian Women’s Political Movement reiterate its demand that the Syrian transitional government achieve justice and accountability by launching comprehensive investigations, prosecuting the perpetrators, providing the families of abducted women with a safe space to express their suffering, and documenting violations without denial or neglect by the authorities.
We also emphasize the importance of the role of honest and impartial media, as well as civil society, in shedding light on these crimes and standing in solidarity with the victims and their families by all possible means.
Justice for all those who have been wronged and assaulted
