The Syrian Women’s Political Movement Statement on Arab Normalisation with the Syrian Regime

The Syrian Women’s Political Movement urges all member states of the Arab League to reject the return of the Syrian regime to the Arab League, and to reject any normalisation of relations with it, as the gross human rights violations committed by the regime, which led to its isolation, cannot be ignored, and these violations are still continuing.

After more than a decade of war in Syria; The humanitarian situation in the country remains dire. Millions of people have been forced to flee their homes, hundreds of thousands have been killed and thousands more have been tortured, detained or forcibly disappeared. and the documented sexual violence crimes as a tool of war. The Syrian regime is directly responsible for these atrocities and must be held accountable for its actions.

Furthermore; The Syrian regime has shown no sign of willingness to engage in a credible peace process. Instead, it continued to block the international community’s efforts to find a political solution to the war in Syria. This indicates that the regime does not take the suffering of its people seriously, and only seeks to cling to power, whatever the cost.

We stress that the normalisation with the Syrian regime will only lead to strengthening its grip on power, and will not lead to alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people. The demands of the Syrian people must be given priority in all policy-making decisions, and those responsible for human rights abuse in Syria must be held accountable.

We call on the member states of the Arab  League not to allow the Syrian regime to rejoin the Arab League or normalise relations with it before reaching a political solution that respects the rights and aspirations of the Syrian people, in accordance with Resolution No. 2254 of the UN Security Council, and we call for efforts to be made to achieve this goal. .

In conclusion, we urge the Arab countries and the international community to continue supporting efforts to end the war in Syria and achieve a just and sustainable peace for all Syrian women and men.

Long live Syria, land and people
